Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland

“Over the years, we have had many highs and our success goes from strength to strength. Working with Disney was certainly up there with the greatest.

This may sound a little strange, but working with Disney on our Alice collection showed me that we really had made it into the limelight. It’s not that we needed or even necessarily wanted the publicity, it was just a great honour and great fun to work with such a fantastic, creative company.

Roberto on the Alice in Wonderland collection

Of course I had read the book, but when I saw Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland, I was mesmerised by the imagery! It certainly made my creative pulse race and I couldn’t wait to get started on the production. But because the film was so powerful, I also knew we were going to have our work cut out getting anywhere near its level of detail.

I don’t know how many times we watched the film, but in the end we decided to use the underworld and gothic mood as our inspiration. We also chose to avoid the obvious characters and create something completely different, choosing natural elements and some of the most spectacular creatures. We wanted to reflect the detail of the film in each of our creations and so made dozens of versions before we arrived at ones we were pleased with. It took seriously intricate workmanship and incredible patience.

H.Stern Alice in Wonderland Rings

The five rings we produced were definitely worth the effort – they are unlike anything we have every produced before or since – the jabberwocky, Cheshire Cat, topiary garden, living flowers and mushroom forest. Because Alice changes size several times in the film, we produced two sizes – human and extraordinary. The latter really are extraordinary creations – beautiful sculptural pieces measuring 10 cm in height crafted from the finest materials including enamel, diamonds, noble gold and others. Like the film, creating them was a real adventure.”
